MY FINISHED ROMANCE POSTER – BEFORE THE RAIN

I know I had already practised my skills with photoshop to develop my horror poster however I thought it was important to practise another genre film poster for extra practise before my film poster (this is because I can’t stand horror films!!).

ROMANCE POSTER

I used all of my knowledge from the previous poster to develop this one so I did not need to refer to other sources.

I used my knowledge from photography to create a narrow depth of field background photo that I would be able to use. Unlike the horror poster I wanted to use natural light that wasn’t forced on the image. For this I stood my model next to a well lit window. One thing i realised after capturing my photo was how the focus was on her her and not her eye, if I had realised this earlier I would have retaken the photo. This is something I can learn from for my own film poster.

Below shows an image of the poster during the editing process: I edited the background to be more blurry as the original image wasn’t (from internet); I changed the direction of the light on her face; I made her face warmer by using the saturation settings; I flipped the image so the direction of light in the image and on her face was more believable; and finally added text and removed the original background.

I am glad I produced this poster as I was worried it would be more difficult to create a poster of a different genre. By doing this it has raised my confidence for the future.

My Finished Horror Poster – Omniscient

After endlessly playing around with different editing techniques I finally settled on my final poster. I think i was able to create a very effective photo compared to my original image, by doing this it has helped me to improve my photoshop skills for when I come to make my film poster later on in the year.

How Youtube Tutorials Helped Me With My Editing

When I came up with an idea I wanted to produce on Photoshop but I didn’t know how to make it, I typed what i wanted to produce into google and it would come up with a YouTube Tutorial.

The One i found particularly useful was one by ‘Justthisgood‘: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC_ch_d7GMI&list=PLn4jPrNtaQyn1IUqFz-pBaF49HaTnQ7dl

He gave you an on screen step-by-step tutorial of how to produce the image I wanted. I found these really useful as it showed you how to use it on screen as well as his voice over explaining what he was doing and why.

How I Edited My Photo With Photoshop

I began my editing by making the eyes white. I attempted to keep the depth to the eyes so they still remained 3D. I played around with different tools, such as: Blur, Smudge, Colour Picker, air brush and blend tools. This took a while for me to do by I enjoyed playing around with the program.

Screen Shot 2014-07-04 at 12.16.06Next I went on to adding small white hands in the eyes. I wanted this to be subtle so it created an air of mystery to the poster as it would be unclear to why they were there.

Thirdly I edited the shadows and colour of the image. I went into filter and click on lighting effects, this allowed me to change the direction of the light and helped me highlight the areas I thought were most important. I also edited the saturation of the image so it was dull and lacked vibrancy so the focus image wouldn’t juxtapose the theme of the film.

After i used a YouTUbe tutorial to help me create the crack in the face (further explanation in: How YouTube Tutorials Helped Me With My Editing).

And then finally I created the ’embossed’ writing under filters to make the title look 3D and then added the distributors paragraph below as well as including an 18 certificate.

Choosing my Image

I decided to chose the image below as my starting point for my poster the resin for this is because of the various settings we used to take it to produce a high quality image, such as:

ISO – The ISO was at 100, this meant that the image would come out as better quality so we would be able to resize it and distort it if we wished and it would still remain as a high quality photograph.

Aperture – we had our aperture at f/3.5 so everything in the background would be blurred but the foreground image (e.g. my face) was in focus – shallow depth of field. We decided to do this instead of having a broad depth of field as we didn’t need/want anything in the background to distract us from the main focus.

Example of a Narrow Depth of Field and a Broad Depth of Field

Shutter speed – Our shutter speed was kept at 1.O (a second) to allow as much light in as possible to create a clear image. We had to keep it at 1 second at the subject was in such a dark place. We understood by doing this we had to use a tripod to reduce camera shake.

Photography

I began my A2 coursework with a mini photography project of my own. I decided to practise techniques that i had been taught about shutter speed, aperture and focus point. It took a while to figure out how to get the right settings for the best quality photos:

Too Dark (Under Exposed)

This photo could have been due to a small aperture and slow shutter sped which is why it was too dark.

Too Bright (over exposed):

This photo could have been due to a large aperture and quick shutter sped which is why it was too light.

The Perfect Photo

After a while my photography group and I finally found out the perfect aperture and shutter speed to portray the light we could see on the camera as well.
